Clinical work

An overview of the clinical work I undertake, across five areas of specialist eye care.

01

Glaucoma

My work in specialist glaucoma services involves the assessment and ongoing management of patients with glaucoma and related conditions.

This includes interpreting OCT imaging, visual-field investigations and other clinical findings, evaluating disease stability and progression, and making appropriate management decisions within established clinical pathways.

Through this work, I’ve developed a particular interest in longitudinal disease monitoring, risk assessment and the role of advanced optometric practice in delivering glaucoma services.

02

Telemedicine & virtual ophthalmology

An important part of my clinical practice involves working within telemedicine and virtual ophthalmology services, supporting clinical decision-making, disease monitoring and effective patient pathways.

My work includes low-risk glaucoma monitoring, acute clinical case assessment, clinician support and referral triage.

These responsibilities have strengthened my interest in the relationship between clinical judgement, diagnostic data and healthcare delivery, particularly how virtual pathways can support continuity of care, effective prioritisation and appropriate use of specialist services.

What the work involves

  • Low-risk glaucoma monitoring

Reviewing longitudinal clinical information and diagnostic investigations to assess disease stability and identify patients who may require further investigation or specialist escalation. This involves applying clinical judgement to support safe monitoring and appropriate management within established glaucoma pathways.

  • Acute clinical case assessment

Supporting the assessment of acute ocular presentations, determining clinical urgency and identifying appropriate management or escalation pathways.

  • Clinician support

Providing clinical guidance, second opinions and support to fellow clinicians, particularly when managing complex or uncertain clinical presentations.

  • Referral triage & pathway management

Reviewing referrals, assessing clinical urgency and directing patients towards appropriate ophthalmic services and levels of care. This involves balancing clinical risk, patient safety and effective use of specialist services.

  • Clinical pathway development

My experience in virtual care has also developed my interest in how clinical pathways can be structured and improved through consistent assessment protocols, reliable clinical data and effective communication between services.

03

Emergency & acute eye care

As an Independent Prescribing Optometrist working within hospital eye casualty and acute ophthalmology services, I assess and manage a broad range of acute ocular presentations.

My responsibilities include clinical examination, diagnosis, therapeutic prescribing, emergency triage and determining appropriate treatment or onward referral.

This work requires clinical reasoning, effective risk assessment and timely decision-making, often involving complex presentations.

04

Medical retina

My experience in medical retina involves assessing and monitoring patients with retinal disease, interpreting OCT and other diagnostic imaging, and contributing to ongoing clinical management within specialist ophthalmology services.

This has developed my interest in retinal imaging, disease progression and the wider diagnostic potential of ocular imaging.

05

Clinical leadership & service development

Alongside direct patient care, I undertake clinical leadership responsibilities, supporting fellow clinicians with complex cases, providing second opinions and contributing to clinical decision-making.

My work also includes supporting patient flow, reviewing clinical pathways, contributing to guidance and participating in initiatives aimed at improving clinical safety and service efficiency.

This has developed my interest in how clinical expertise, workforce capability and service design can work together to improve patient care.
